Tesla has announced that it’s working on a cheaper version of its most popular car – the Model Y. This decision comes as the company faces less demand, changing government rules, and more competition from other electric car makers.
Right now, the Model Y makes up about two-thirds of Tesla's worldwide sales, so it's a very important car for the company.
What Changes Can We Expect?
Tesla hasn't given full details yet, but this new affordable Model Y is expected to cost around $30,000 or even less. To make it cheaper, Tesla might:
- Use a smaller battery (which means less driving range)
- Remove some luxury features, like:
- Active noise cancellation
- Rear 8-inch touchscreen
For comparison, the current Model Y Long-Range starts at $37,490, and the AWD version costs $41,490 in the U.S. (after a $7,500 tax credit, available until September 30, 2025). Once this credit ends, Tesla cars will become more expensive, so this low-cost version will attract more buyers.
What’s Going on With Tesla?
Elon Musk recently said Tesla may have a few tough months ahead, which already caused a 7% drop in its stock price. Still, Musk is hopeful about the future. He says Tesla will come back stronger with new ideas like:
- Self-driving robotaxis (now being tested in Texas)
- The upcoming Cybercab
- Humanoid robots that could change the tech industry

Musk believes things will get better for Tesla by late 2026. Until then, the new cheaper Model Y is expected to help the company keep up its sales and bring in more customers who want to try electric vehicles.
