What is Traffic EChallan?
An e-challan, short for electronic challan, is a digitally generated fine issued by traffic authorities to road users who violate traffic rules, as per the provisions provided under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. The e-challan system replaces the traditional paper-based challans and leverages CCTV surveillance and automated speed detectors to capture real-time offences.
The moment a vehicle is caught violating a traffic regulation, the system identifies its registration number and matches it with the details stored at the RTO. The violator then receives an e-challan directly on their registered mobile number or email address. This digital shift brings in more transparency, reduces manual errors, and promotes timely compliance.
E Challan Check by Vehicle Number
The process of e challan check online was launched in India in 2016 by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to replace manual challans with a digital system for traffic violators. The system, developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), was aimed at streamlining the process of issuance and payments, making it easier for citizens to track and resolve any pending traffic challans.
