What is a Driving Licence (DL)?

A Driving Licence (DL) is an official document issued by the government that authorizes you to drive a vehicle on public roads. It confirms that you have successfully cleared the required driving tests, understand traffic rules, and are capable of driving safely. A Driving Licence (DL) also confirms your eligibility for certain legal benefits, such as vehicle insurance.

Types of Driving Licence

01

Learner's Licence (LL)

A Learner's Licence (LL) is a permit that allows you to practice driving while a licensed driver is present with you. It is the initial step before obtaining a full Driving Licence (DL). To obtain an LL, you must clear a basic test related to traffic rules. The LL is generally valid for six months, during which you can practice before appearing for the test to get a full DL.

02

Permanent Driving Licence (DL)

A Permanent Driving Licence (DL) is issued by the RTO in India after you pass the driving test and complete the required learning period. To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, hold a Learner's Licence for one month, and submit documents such as proof of age and address. This licence is valid for 20 years and applies to different types of vehicles. After completing 20 years, renewal is required.

03

Commercial Driving Licence (CDL)

A Commercial Driving Licence (CDL) is required for driving commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses. To obtain a CDL, you must meet specific age and medical criteria, pass the required tests, and possess a learner's license. It remains valid for 5 years and must be renewed along with a medical checkup. Various CDL categories exist depending on the type of vehicle.

04

International Driving Permit (IDP)

An International Driving Permit (IDP) allows you to drive in foreign countries by translating your domestic driving license into multiple languages. To apply for an IDP, you must hold a valid driving license from your home country, be at least 18 years old, and submit an application through an authorized agency. The IDP is valid for one year.

What Is a Learning Licence (LL)?

A Learning Licence (LL) permits you to practice driving legally. To obtain it, you must be 18 years or older, clear a basic test, and submit documents such as proof of age and address. You can apply for a learning driving license online. It is valid for six months, and during this period, you are allowed to practice driving under the supervision of a licensed driver. Once this period is completed, you can apply for a permanent license.
