The new GST 2.0 reform has made cars and SUVs more affordable in India, and Mahindra Thar is one of the biggest gainers. Depending on the variant, the popular off-roader is now cheaper by Rs 81,400 to Rs 1.35 lakh.
Why Did Mahindra Thar Prices Drop?
The Union Government recently introduced GST 2.0 with only three tax slabs – 5%, 18% and 40%. Earlier, there were 28% and 48% categories, which have now been removed. With this change, automakers have started cutting prices from September 22, 2025.
Mahindra, however, passed on the benefit earlier, from September 6, 2025, across its entire lineup including the Thar.
New Mahindra Thar Price Cuts (Variant-Wise)
- Diesel 4×2 (LX & AX Opt): Cheaper by Rs 1.35 lakh and Rs 1.18 lakh
- Petrol 2WD LX: Reduced by Rs 81,400
- Diesel 4×4 (LX & AX Opt): Cheaper by Rs 1.01 lakh and Rs 86,900
- Petrol 4×4 (LX & AX Opt): Reduced by Rs 96,300 and Rs 83,100
Earlier, some variants attracted 31% GST (28% + 3% cess) or 48% GST, but now they fall under 18% or 40% slabs under GST 2.0.
What Does This Mean for Car Buyers?
The new tax structure has led to price drops across most car brands including Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, and Toyota. With Diwali around the corner, this is a golden opportunity for buyers to get their favorite car at a lower price.

Mahindra Thar: Engine Options
Mahindra Thar is available with three engine options:
- 1.5L Diesel (117 bhp, 300 Nm)
- 2.2L Diesel (130 bhp, 300 Nm)
- 2.0L Petrol (150 bhp, 300–320 Nm)
Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
