The Indian passenger car market saw a major shuffle in September 2025 retail sales, according to Vahan data. While Maruti Suzuki continued to lead, Tata Motors climbed to second place, pushing Mahindra & Mahindra to third. Hyundai slipped further down after recording one of its sharpest declines.
Maruti Suzuki Still No.1 Despite Sales Dip
- September 2025 sales: 1,22,785 units
August 2025 sales: 1,30,242 units - Change: -5.77%
Even with a month-on-month (MoM) fall, Maruti stayed far ahead thanks to strong demand for its hatchbacks, SUVs, and MPVs.
Tata Motors Overtakes Mahindra
- September 2025 sales: 40,068 units
- August 2025 sales: 37,988 units
- Change: +5.44%
Tata’s growth was driven by steady demand for Nexon and Punch, helping it secure the second spot.

Mahindra Drops to Third

Despite the popularity of Creta and Venue, Hyundai posted one of the largest drops among top OEMs.
Toyota and Kia Also See Declines
- Toyota: Down 24.23% (20,051 units in September vs 26,453 in August)
- Kia: Down 12% (16,540 units in September vs 18,793 in August)
Toyota’s fall came despite steady demand for Innova Hycross and Fortuner, while Kia also struggled in September.
